Programme:
Brahms: Double Concerto in A minor, Op. 102
Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68
Brahms wrote his final large-scale orchestral work in his 50s with much trepidation, partly because he wasn’t a string player and his friendship with Joachim had also turned sour. Fortunately, the composer’s Double Concerto became a token of reconciliation. This concert features two string virtuosos Alexandra Conunova and Pablo Ferrández, respectively the 2012 Joseph Joachim Competition winner and young performer signed by SONY record company. Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 is often jokingly referred to as Beethoven’s Tenth (with some even seeing hints of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy in Brahms’s finale), seamlessly connecting the era of classical romanticism. Being meticulous, Brahms worked on his first symphony for more than a decade, wielding astounding results in a perfect fusion of technical prowess and emotional depth.
