Maestro Hu Yongyan is an internationally acclaimed conductor familiar to and loved by music fans in Macao. He founded an orchestra academy at the Central Conservatory of Music, where he served as artistic director and dean from 2006 to 2016. In 2018, he was awarded the Yale Presidential Award as a Distinguished Visiting Professor. On the other hand, Zeng Yun, a young French horn player from mainland China, is making his debut in Macao. He was the gold medal winner of the brass category at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition. At 22, he was appointed by Staatskapelle Berlin as the principal horn player, thus becoming one of the youngest principal players in the orchestra’s history. Zeng will perform with the Macao Orchestra two classic works by two great composers. Among Mozart’s horn concertos written for Joseph Leutgeb, a horn virtuoso he had known since an early age, Horn Concerto No.1 is a very difficult and technically challenging piece for performers, while Horn Concerto No.2 composed by German composer Richard Strauss in his later years gives full play to artistic expression and horn playing skills, with a touch of sadness.
