Macao Orchestra is a prestigious professional ensemble based in Macao, committed to delivering captivating performances of both Chinese and Western classical music, spanning traditional and contemporary repertoire.

Since 1 February 2022, Macao Orchestra has been managed by Macao Orchestra Company, Limited, which is wholly owned by the Macao SAR Government. In the future, Macao Orchestra will persist in refining its professional performances and presenting a range of high-quality classical music spectacles.

To foster the growth of the Orchestra, we are seeking accomplished musicians with professional qualifications and exceptional performance standards to join us. Currently, the following full-time musician positions are available for recruitment.

Responsibilities:
1. To participate in rehearsals and performances, and to collaborate with other musicians in the performances.
2. To arrive on time for rehearsals and performances as arranged by the orchestra or the conductor.
3. To bring their own musical instruments and equipment required for rehearsals and performances in addition to the musical instruments provided by the orchestra, and to abide by the regulations and arrangements of the performance venue.

Eligibility:
1. At least 18 years old, completed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in music or a similar field corresponding to musical instrument performance, or a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree or combined bachelor’s and master’s and doctor’s degree that does not confer a bachelor’s degree.
2. Good English communication skills and team spirit.

Prerequisites:
1. All information submitted will be used for audition purposes only, all documents will be kept confidentially and won’t be returned.
2. Audition committee of Macao Orchestra will screen all applications and contact suitable applicants by email and arrange for a live audition at designated venue.
3. The live audition will include solo section and an orchestral excerpts section.
4. The live audition will be conducted as a solo without any accompaniment;
5. No copies of repertoire or scores will be available during the live audition, please download them in advance.
6. Late applications will not be accepted.
7. Applicants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses.

 

Salary and Benefits:
The monthly salary of the principals starts from MOP41,000; and the monthly salary of the Tutti musician starts from MOP32,000.
The above-mentioned positions are entitled to a monthly allowance of MOP3,000 and benefits stipulated by the Macao Orchestra Company, Limited.

1 st Macao International Children’s Arts Festival –
Performing with Joshua Bell and Musicians of the Academy of St Martin in The Fields Orchestra

Music Camp Introduction/Preface:

Co-hosted by Cultural Affairs Bureau and Wynn Resorts (Macau), S.A. and produced by Macao Orchestra Company, Limited, the “1st Macao International Children’s Arts Festival – Music Camp” is the signature annual large-scale music summer programme of the Festival, to be held from 16 to 21 August 2024. This year, the internationally renowned violin master Joshua Bell, together with several string musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, will form a String Orchestra with about 40 young string players to practice and rehearse during the Music Camp to broaden their musical horizons. On the last day of the Music Camp, the String Orchestra will present a public performance to showcase the rehearsal results of the Music Camp.

16 to 21 August 2024 (Friday to Wednesday)

Activities:

1. One-on-one Musical Instrument Lessons
Music Camp participants will receive one-on-one musical instrument lessons given by string musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

2. String Orchestra Rehearsals
Music Camp participants will take part in the String Orchestra rehearsals with Joshua Bell and string musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

3. Master Class
Music Camp participants will have the opportunity to participate in Master Class by string musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

4. Cultural Tours
Music Camp participants will visit Macao’s world heritage sites which have witnessed the harmonious co-existence of Chinese and Western cultures to learn about the history and culture of Macao.

5. Concert (Public Performance)
Music Camp participants will perform with Joshua Bell and string musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

*Outstanding violinist among them will also have the opportunity to perform the solo part of Bach’s “Concerto for 2 Violins” with Joshua Bell.

*Only participants with an attendance rate of 90% or above will be awarded with certificates and will be entitled to participate in the Concert.

Applicant:

Holders of Macao Resident Identity Card (Permanent/Non-Permanent) or non-residents of Macao, born between 2006 and 2016 inclusive, who have learned string instruments, can sign up to participate in the Music Camp individually.

String instruments include: Violin, viola, cello and double bass.

Selection Methods:
1. Submit the individual’s performance video of the designated excerpt(s) before 19 July 2024, the deadline for registration.
2. Admitted applicants will be notified by email on or before 1 August 2024. Participation fees for admitted participant must be paid in full before the specified time, otherwise it will be deemed as giving up the participation.

Video Requirements:
1. The applicant’s face, hands and the instrument must be clearly shown in the video. And there must
be no accompaniment. Pauses are allowed between excerpts, but the video must not be edited, or processed or modified in any way.

2. Each video must include a self-introduction in English as follows:

Expenses:
1. Participation Fee of the Music Camp
MOP10,000*

*Admitted applicant who holds a Permanent/Non-permanent Resident Identity Card of the Macao Special Administrative Region can participate in the Music Camp at a discounted price of MOP2,000.

Notes:

  • The above fees include lunches and dinners in the Music Camp.
  • The above fees do not include the fees of local transportation and pick-up to and from the venue of the Music Camp, as well as the accommodation fees and transportation fees from the place of residence of the admitted applicants who do not reside in Macao. Travelling expenses and accommodation arrangements need to be handled by themselves.
  • Admitted applicants must bring their own instruments (except double bass) and bows (applicable to all admitted applicants, including double bass players).
  • Non-local admitted applicants must make their own arrangements for visas, accommodations and transportation, including the daily transportation to and from the venue of the Music Camp. They must purchase their travel, medical and accident insurance by themselves and submit the proof of purchase to the host for their own interest protection.
  • The “1 st Macao International Children’s Arts Festival – Music Camp” will provide daytime (10:00-22:00) participants care services at the Music Camp venue during the Music Camp period. The caring of participants from 22:00 to 10:00 the next day will need to be arranged by their parents or guardians.
  • It is recommended that non-local participant is accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Music Camp will only provide participants care services during the day (10:00-22:00) at the Music Camp venue. The caring of participants outside the Music Camp venue must be handled by parents or guardians.

2. Accommodation Fees (Optional)
If an admitted applicant needs the accommodation provided by the Music Camp, he/she can pay an additional MOP10,000 to stay in a five-star hotel provided by the Music Camp.

Notes:

  • The optional hotel room types are double bed room and standard twin room. The above fees only include the basic hotel room charges and one breakfast per day. Additional hotel charges (e.g. paid items in the room, extra breakfast, etc.) are to be paid by the admitted students to the hotel.
  • Guardians of admitted students are responsible for their own accommodation and other expenses.

Macao Orchestra 2023-24 Season “The Future of Classical Music” Concert
Young Musician Audition Programme

The Macao Orchestra holds the concert “The Future of Classical Music” every season, providing an opportunity for the public to gain a deeper understanding of the music achievements of the new generation in Macao. It also creates a platform for showcasing artistry, allowing young students to perform alongside the musicians of the Macao Orchestra and enhance their individual music proficiency.

The Young Musician Audition Programme of “The Future of Classical Music” was finished earlier, and the response was overwhelming. In order to let more music lovers experience the performance of a professional orchestra, the deadline for applications will be extended until May 7th.

“The Future of Classical Music” will take place on 13 July this year. A special Young Musician Audition Programme has been introduced in this edition, aiming to offer Macao students and music lovers a comprehensive experience of joining a professional orchestra! To provide participants with a complete practical experience from exams to performances, interested individuals are required to take part in the Orchestra’s audition process. The programme is now open for registration until 26 April. Hurry up and register if you’re interested!

Applicants eligibility:
1. Macao ID holders (including permanent and non-permanent) or Student ID holders issued by Macao tertiary level education organisations or Macao Education and Youth Development Bureau
2. 12 Years old or above is required

Enrolment Priorities:
Obtain ABRSM Grade 8 or above level

3. Except instruments provided by orchestra, musicians have to provide their own instrument and equipment for rehearsals and performances and complying with the rules and arrangements of the venue.

Applicants shall:
1. Be at least 18 years of age with good playing and ensemble skills and experience;and can adapt to different musical styles.
2. Have good English language skills and communication skills and be a team player.
