Joly Braga Santos: Divertimento I, Op. 36
This concert led by conductor Tomàs Grau features the Portuguese classical tradition, including a symphony along with two modern compositions. The first director of the National Conservatory in Lisbon, Bomtempo’s Symphony No. 1 (1809) is a beautiful example of the full-flowering of the symphony at that time. Nuno Côrte-Real’s Luar Galego (“Galician Moonlight”) from 2006 is sensual and luminous, spinning melodic fragments and complex harmonies with charm. Our aural colour palette is extended in Joly Braga Santos’s Divertimento I (1960). Combining a light touch with a firm grasp of structure, Santos’s innate talent in creating mesmerizing lines will resound in the beautiful setting of St. Dominic’s Church.
