Macao welcomes French piano royalty Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing Saint- Saëns’s final piano concerto, written in Luxor, where the composer spent his winters (hence its nickname. “Egyptian”). Premiered at Paris’s Salle Pleyel in 1896, its musical influences include Javanese gamelan. Timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the composer-pianist’s debut at the venue, the event was received with adulation. The second half of the programme is devoted to a scandalous work that also premiered in Paris. In 1913, it nearly caused a riot at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Even Saint-Saëns couldn’t contain his shock. The dissonances and unconventional instrumental technique that angered so many, however, are now celebrated as having opened the world to musical modernism.
