Beethoven : Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, “Choral”
In the vast realm of western classical music, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 seems to be the only work that reaches all the top marks in terms of historical influence, artistic importance and popularity. This magnificent grand opus is the milestone that extracts all the essence of the Classical period and ushers the following Romantic era. Exploring a mighty subject that concerns humanity, Symphony No. 9 is a perfect example of how Beethoven developed the traditional symphony into this highly dramatic and philosophical form of art. The work is also the first example of a major composer using human voice in the purely instrumental symphony. Beethoven, with his groundbreaking composition, gifted us with the Ode to Joy – leaving for next generations a universally acclaimed work echoing his great ideal for the whole humanity. And the grandeur of this joyful chorus is a perfect ending for the 2017-18 Season.
